In case you missed it, the focus for end user computing is no longer VDI or endpoint management.
It is now Workspace.
I’ve been using a digital workspace for years. Actually, it might be more accurate to say I’ve been using a digital workspace for decades. Let me show you:
What I consider my first workspace was our family PC running Windows 3 in 1990. I had my desktop. I had my apps. I had my data. All on this one PC.
We all know what happened over the next 20-30 years. We got more of everything. I have more devices
- PC
- Tablet
- Phone
I have more types of apps
- Local
- Virtual
- SaaS/Web
I have more storage repositories
- Local
- OneDrive
- Dropbox
- Google Drive
Unfortunately, my workspace is physically tied to my device. So instead of 1 workspace in the Windows 3.x days, I now have 3 workspaces (PC workspace, tablet workspace and phone workspace).
I have to configure each workspace individually.
My devices are Windows, Android and iOS, which means my workspaces are different.
My devices change every 2-3 years (including platform change) requiring me to reconfigure each workspace individually.
What if we remove the workspace from the end point device?
This would simplify my life. I’m no longer tied to the device.
I can swap devices as needed and my workspace remains the same. Regardless of device, my virtual workspace would be able to deliver local apps, virtual apps and SaaS/web apps. It would also provide me with all of my storage repositories.
The workspace holds a lot of promise. Will it be better than what we have to deal with now? Only time will tell. So stay tuned for more as we dive deeper into the workspace.
Would be nice to know how to get Workspace view when installing the client. Have not find documentation as of yet how to test the new views. Sure makes me wonder if it is prerequisite to subscribe to some cloud offering to even use workspace. Would sure be nice to have a clear path to workspace. It is very mucky waters.
Vmware has had Workspace One for awhile. What is Citrix going to do to set themselves apart?

As for now, the newer workspace view is only the cloud version and not StoreFront (on-prem). Not sure if this will change.
