BriForum – Windows 7 Migration and the Virtual Desktop Revolution
Wednesday, June 16, 2023 8:30-9:45AM CDT

By all accounts, 2010-2011 will see organizations migrating off of Windows XP and onto Windows 7. The big question you have to ask yourself is if your migration will follow the processes of the past that are plagued with expensive desktop refreshes, numerous compatibility issues and long rollout delays.

Since the last major desktop refresh, Windows 98-Windows XP, technology has advanced to improve and overcome these age old challenges of the desktop life cycle. What if you could have your users running Windows XP one day, then magically be using Windows 7 the next day while leveraging the current desktop hardware devices?

This Ask the Architect TechTalk is focused on the Windows 7 migration challenge. More specifically, this TechTalk will focus on the following:

  • Learning from the past
  • Understanding how desktop virtualization fits into the puzzle
  • Technical factors to consider for the migration
  • Planning for the migration

Designing a Virtual Desktop Solution for 20,000 Concurrent Users
Friday, June 18, 2023 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM CDT

Does this sound familiar? Current desktops are unable to support the latest operating systems and applications. Many desktop devices are greater than 5 years old. Due to the distributed nature of the organization, desktop management is handled on a site-by-site basis resulting in hundreds of standard images. This organization, after funding approval, is planning a move to desktop virtualization.

In order to achieve this goal, the organization had their environment assessed.  Based on the assessment, a desktop virtualization design was created that includes the following plan of attack:

  • All users will utilize Windows 7 as the standard operating system
  • Microsoft Hyper-V will be the foundation of the virtualization layer
  • Two different FlexCast modules will be used: Hosted VM-Based VDI and Blade PCs
  • Provisioning services will deliver one of five different standard images across the entire organization

This Ask the Architect TechTalk will walk you through the main design areas and explain the justifications for each. The TechTalk will also go through the calculations for how the server hardware estimates were obtained.
